Air Fares Rise Again

Why? High fuel prices -- and because airlines can.

United raised its domestic air fares by as much as $50 per roundtrip, which Continental quickly matched. Some travelers may be persuaded to book with these or other carriers instead of low-fare Southwest, which found "an ambiguity" in some of its maintenance records related to required testing. The carrier took 38 Boeing 737 aircaft out of service while it addressed the issue. One plane with a questionable maintenance record had previously been retired, while five were undergoing regular, scheduled maintenance when the "ambiguity" came to light.

  1. You never hear of airfares going down and this is sad because, many people are struggling to save the pennies for their holiday etc. No one can ever have fun abroad when having to downsize on the portions of what they eat because of having pay extra on flight tickets.

  2. No, you don't hear about air fares in general going down, but you DO hear about special fare sales. If you want to go where there's a sale at a time that the sale is in effect, there are still decent deals to be had. Obviously, they don't work for everyone everytime, but when they, they're worth grabbing.
