Images of Egypt: Cairo Street Scenes

A regular tourist's glimpse at Cairo street life

The view from any motorcoach window is of an exotic, vibrant city. There's nothing unusual or privileged in these images, which were all taken with a point-and-shoot on common tourist routes from venue to venue. Excuse the occasional glare, reflection or shaky focus. Of course, there is a modern Cairo too and many citizens who go about their business in Western garb, but these images are more interesting and more, well, Egyptian.

And no, this drive-by didn't make me homesick

  1. It seems odd that when it's as hot as you describe that women would wear black instead of while or a lighter color! I can imagine how hot it would be in those clothes.

  2. Sybille - I can't imagine it either. But even those who dress Western cover themselves. Women cover their arms and sometimes headscarves. Men wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Little girls wear tights or leggings under skirts and dresses. I saw one guy in the Valley of the Kings, where it was 93 degrees, wearing a lined jacket that had a hood with a fake fur collar.
