Icelandair Adds Destinations, Lowers Fuel Surchargers

Icelandair to fly to 20 cities in the UK and Europe

With connections through its hub in Reykjavik and the addition of Stavanger, Norway, and Düsseldorf, Germany, later this year, Icelandair's route system is expanding to some 20 destinations in Scandinavia, Great Britain and Continental Europe. These new flights will operate seasonally from May 8 to September 29, 2009. Year-round North American gateways are Boston and New York-JFK, with season service to Minneapolis/St. Paul, Orlando Sanford, Halifax and Toronto.

  1. I was wondering if, or when , airlines would lower surcharges. Gasoline prices have plummeted in the last six months, so I would assume that jet fuel prices also decreased.

  2. I'm hoping to go to England in April and am holding off buying a ticket hoping that the fall in fuel prices will bring lower fares.

But I'd heard this was not likely because the airlines buy their fuel months in advance at fixed costs so right now their using fuel they paid more than the current market rate for. But I never did understand fare pricing???

  3. As I understand it, many airlines contract for fuel in advance, and that's a gamble. If fuel prices rise, the airlines (and perhaps the passengers) win. If they fall, airlines are required to pay the higher, contracted-for prices, and everybody but the jet-fuel purveyors lose. Sometimes, IMO, airlines could but choose not to lower prices when fuel prices fall.

Last spring, my husband and I grabbed what seemed like bargain tickets when United inaugurated London-Denver nonstop service. The ticket price was under $500, but once the fueld surcharges, security fees and other extras were added, the total came to close to $900.
