Convention Volunteering - The Penultimate Day

Democratic All-Stars speak at the Democratic National Convention's penultimate evening

Barack Obama's official nomination as the Democratic candidate for president was anticipated, but the way in which it occurred surprised many. While the roll call ("The great state of Wherever proudly casts XX votes for Senator Hillary Clinton and XX votes for Senator Barack Obama"), Clinton, accompanied by her New York colleague Senator Chuck Schumer entered the floor of the Democratic National Convention to join the New York delegation. There, in a gracious speech, she moved to suspend the rules and nominate Barack Obama by acclamation.

The evening was highlighted by some of the party's and the nation's best speakers and most highly regarded leaders. This Who's Who included former Secretary of State Madeleine Allbright, former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, present Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid, Evan Bayh, Senator John Kerry, Governor Bill Richardson and former President Bill Clinton, who spoke to honor both his wife's candidacy and to support Barack Obama's. The final scheduled speaker, Senator Joseph Biden and vice presidential nominee, was joined at the end by Senator Barack Obama, Democratic candidate for president. But you don't need me to tell you what you have seen on television or read in the paper. But I can offer you a few more images of people I had a chance to snap at the Pepsi Center today (some up close for the second time).

  1. You really have the inside scoop on this. So lucky. That will never be here, as we are only a territory. *sniff*

  2. Mimi - I feel pretty lucky too. The last time Denver hosted a national political convention was 1908. Today will be a long day for volunteers. We have to pick our credentials up by 9:00 a.m.

  3. Great blog Claire, and your photos, with their blurriness, work! They catch the hurry and excitement of the day and make us feel like we are there catching glimpses with you.

  4. Actually , Claire, since we are currently in British Columbia, where there is little about the DNC on TV or in the news, it is great to read your updates and the inside info!

  5. More fabulous photos from the heart of the action -- thanks Claire! -- Andrea Meyer

  6. My mom had a pant suit just like this one -- we buried her in the pink version. NOT a flattering style. Why not just dress like a professional businesswoman? Who is her stylist? It's a BAD look.

"There are runs to individual network complexes -- ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox -- with trailers and satellite dishes." Any to AirAmerica? Who's the lucky one who delivers to Jon Stewart et al.?

How can I get a "Nachos for Obama" shirt? Or "Burritos for Obama"? If you run past the Qdoba, I'll take an XL!

Jimmy Carter is still the coolest man in the room as far as I'm concerned. I've been watching proceedings on PBS/Jim Lehrer, which has been more substantive than what the networks are running. I occasionally surf over to a network, but it sucks. Joe Biden Rocks!

But I'm scared to DEATH of the talk: you'd think it was the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ the way people are setting Obama up. I'm nervous as all hell, especially knowing that we in Boulder/Denver (maybe D) live in a bubble. So many people HATE B.O. just because of his skin color fer cryinoutloud.

Ref Kennedy: "As he rode along, he blew kisses to onlookers (trust me; that's what he was doing, which might not be apparent from the expression I caught in the one picture I managed to snap)" -- ah, the elder statesman gets respect regardless of how many people he's pissed off along the way. I loved Caroline's and his presentations on Tuesday.

Ditto the pantsuit comment, regarding Nancy Pelosi. What ARE these women thinking?

All that being said, thank you for the entertaining, wonderful up-to-the-minute inside look at the carnival. Though you're working in the cavern, you still have a front row seat as a witness to history.
